  • National Commission

    National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research. An interdisciplinary advisory body, established by Congressional legislation in 1974, which was in existence until 1978, and which issued a series of reports and recommendations on ethical issues in research and medicine, many of which are now embodied in federal regulations.
  • National Electrical Code®

    The electrical code used throughout the United States. Published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), it is an indispensable aid to every electrician, contractor, architect, builder, inspector, and anyone who must specify or certify electrical installations.

    A compendium of purity and testing criteria for chemicals, usually used in combination with the USP.
  • National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST)

    A federal agency under the Department of Commerce, originally established by an act of Congress on March 3, 1901 as the National Bureau of Standards. The Institute's overall goal is to strengthen and advance the Nation's science and technology and facilitate their effective application for public benefit. The National Computer Systems Laboratory conducts research and provides, among other things, the technical foundation for computer related policies of the Federal Government.

    Immunity that is established after the occurrence of a disease.
  • Natural Killer Cell (NK)

    A type of leukocyte that attacks cancerous or virus-infected cells without previous exposure to the antigen. NK cell activity is stimulated by interferon.
