  • Dolly

The name of the first mammal to be created by cloning a cell from an adult animal. In this particular case, the cell came from the mammary tissue of an adult ewe. The creation of Dolly showed that the process of differentiation into adult tissue is not, as previously thought, irreversible. The result was achieved by nuclear transfer. Dolly’s birth was announced in 1997. Since then, cattle and mice have also been cloned from adult cells.
  • Domain

A segment of a protein that has a discrete function or conformation. At the protein level, a domain can be as small as a few amino acid residues or as large as half of the entire protein.
  • Dominant Allele

A gene that is expressed, regardless of whether its counterpart allele on the other chromosome is dominant or recessive. Autosomal dominant disorders are produced by a single mutated dominant allele, even though its corresponding allele is normal.
  • Donneur d’ordre (Contract giver)

  • DOP

    Dispersed Oil Particulate
  • DOP

    Dioctyl Phthalate
  • DOP (Dioctyl Phthalate)

A non-dispersed test aerosol historically used to evaluate integrity of HEPA filters.
  • DOP (Dioctyl Phthalate)

Material used in the past to generate aerosols comprising particles in the 0.1 to 0.7 micron range (typically with an average size of 0.3 micron) used to test HEPA and ULPA filters. This chemical is believed to have carcinogenic properties and has been generally replaced by a mineral oil, e.g., Emery 3004/Durasyn 164, or Shell Ondina EL.The smoke generated from this has very similar characteristics and the term DOP testing remains, although it is now understood to mean “Dispersed Oil Particulate”.
  • DOP (Dioctyl Phthalate)

A mono-dispersed test aerosol of sub-micron particles, generated to challenge (evaluate integrity) of HEPA filters for HVAC.
  • DOP (Dispersed Oil Particulate)

  • Dopant

Substance that, after sorption and/or diffusion, is incorporated in the bulk of a product and is capable of changing the properties of materials, even in trace amounts.
  • DOS

  • Dosage Form

(ICH Q1A (R2)) A pharmaceutical product type (e.g., tablet, capsule, solution, cream) that contains a drug substance generally, but not necessarily, in association with excipients.
  • Dosage Form

The form in which the drug is delivered to the patient. This could be parenteral, topical, tablet, oral (liquid or dissolved powder), suppository, inhalation, transdermal, etc.
  • Dosage Group

A group of subjects in a clinical trial receiving the same dosage (amount) of a drug being tested.
  • Dose

The amount of a chemical that enters or is absorbed by the body. Dose is usually expressed in milligrams of chemical per kilogram of body weight (mg/kg).
